What’s the Actual Difference Between Downlight and Surface Mount?
The fundamental difference is installation method, which determines how the finished ceiling looks.
Fits into a circular cutout in the plasterboard ceiling. The fitting sits flush inside the ceiling, you only see the trim ring and the lamp. Creates a clean, minimal look. Requires a false ceiling (plasterboard or gypsum board) with enough clearance above.
Screws or clips directly onto any ceiling surface. No cutting required. Available in round, square, and rectangular panels. Works on bare concrete ceilings, existing BV units, or anywhere recessed installation is not practical.
What is the difference between downlight and surface mount?
A recessed LED downlight sits flush inside the ceiling for a clean, seamless look. A surface mount panel light sits on top of the ceiling with visible body and screws. Downlights require a false ceiling; surface mounts work on any flat surface. The trade-off is aesthetics vs installation cost.
False Ceilings: When You Need One and When You Don’t
Most landed homes and condominiums being renovated in Kepong, Kepong Baru, Kepong Jinjang, and Sri Damansara will include plasterboard false ceilings in the renovation package, this is the standard for most IDs in KL. If your reno includes false ceilings, recessed downlights are the obvious choice.
Surface mount panel lights make more sense for:
- Budget renovations that skip false ceilings to save cost
- Existing built-up BV (rumah teres lama) with no plasterboard ceiling
- Rental units where you cannot hack the existing ceiling
- Commercial spaces, factories, offices, with exposed structural ceilings
- Wet areas (IP-rated surface mounts for kitchens and bathrooms)
Can I install downlight without false ceiling?
Only if your existing ceiling has sufficient depth, typically 100mm clearance for the driver and body. Bare concrete slabs (standard in Malaysian construction) do not allow recessed installation. In that case, surface mount is your only practical option without building a false ceiling first.

How Many Downlights Do You Need Per Room?
A reliable rule used by Malaysian electrical contractors:
Ceiling height (ft) ÷ 2 = Spacing between lights (ft)
Example: 10ft ceiling → space downlights every 5ft

How many downlights do I need per room?
Use the ceiling height ÷ 2 formula for spacing, then count how many lights fit within those intervals across the room dimensions. Beam Angle, Wattage, and Dimmability, Specs That Actually Matter
24°, standard for general residential downlights. Focused, defined pools of light. 36°–60°, wider spread for lower ceilings or when using fewer fixtures. 15°, narrow accent beam for feature walls and display lighting.
7W for low ceilings (8ft), 9W–12W for standard 9–10ft ceilings, 15W–18W for double-volume or high ceilings above 12ft. Higher wattage is not always better, over- lit rooms feel uncomfortable. Match wattage to the ceiling height and spacing.
Not all LED downlights are dimmable, this is a specific SKU feature that must be confirmed before purchase. Dimmable drivers are required, and your wall switch must also be a compatible LED dimmer (not a standard on/off switch). If you want dimming, plan it during rough-in, not after installation.
What wattage LED downlight should I use?
9W–12W covers most Malaysian residential applications at 9–10ft ceiling height. A 12W LED downlight produces roughly 900–1100 lumens, equivalent to a 75W–100W incandescent. Do not go above 15W unless your ceiling is genuinely high or the room is very large.
What is a good beam angle for downlights?
24° is the right choice for the majority of Malaysian residential downlight applications. Use wider angles (36°–60°) in compact rooms with lower ceilings, or where you are installing fewer lights and need more spread per fixture.
