What is Colour Temperature (Kelvin)?
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) and describes the visual warmth or coolness of a light source. Despite the name, higher Kelvin means a cooler, bluer light, and lower Kelvin means a warmer, more amber light. Here are the three ranges you will encounter most in Malaysia:
Soft, yellowish-white. Creates a cosy, welcoming feel. Common in living rooms, dining areas, and bedrooms. The default choice for home renovations that want a "hotel" or "café" ambience.
Crisp, balanced light. Neither warm nor cool. Preferred for kitchens, bathrooms, and study rooms where accuracy and clarity matter more than mood.
Bright, bluish-white. High-energy light ideal for industrial, commercial, and task-oriented spaces. Common in Malaysian shops, offices, factories, and car porches.
In Malaysia, 6500K has historically been the default in shops and offices because it maximises visibility and keeps staff alert. Many older homes also used 6500K throughout, which explains why some people find modern 3000K homes feel “too dim” at first, it is a different experience, not a lower quality of light.
What does 3000K mean in LED lights?
3000K is a warm white colour temperature that produces a soft, yellowish-white glow similar to traditional incandescent bulbs. It creates a cosy, welcoming atmosphere ideal for living rooms and bedrooms. Think of it as the light that makes a room feel like a home, not a hospital.
Is 6500K too bright for home use in Malaysia?
6500K is not too bright (brightness is measured in lumens, not Kelvin), but it is too clinical for most living spaces. The blue-dominant spectrum suppresses melatonin and increases alertness, useful in a workshop, uncomfortable in a bedroom. Save 6500K for your car porch, study table lamp, or utility areas.
What is CRI and Why Does It Matter?
CRI stands for Colour Rendering Index, a 0–100 scale measuring how accurately a light source reveals the true colours of objects compared to natural sunlight (which scores 100). A light with CRI 70 will make a navy sofa look slightly grey. A light with CRI 95 makes that same sofa look exactly as it does outdoors.
Passable for stairwells, car parks, and storage areas where colour accuracy is not important. Avoid in living spaces.
The standard for most home LED lighting in Malaysia. Colours look decent, furniture and paint appear reasonably accurate.
A step up from standard. Noticeably better for kitchens and bathrooms where food and skin tones matter.
Showroom-quality colour rendering. Makes paint colours, wood grain, fabrics, and skin tones look exactly as intended. Worth the small price premium for living rooms and dining areas.
The problem in Malaysia is that many budget LED downlights are sold with CRI unlisted or quietly omitted from the spec sheet. If a supplier cannot tell you the CRI, assume CRI 70. Always ask before buying.
What is a good CRI rating for LED downlights?
CRI 80 is the minimum for any living space. For areas where colour really matters, living rooms, dining rooms, master bedrooms, or anywhere you have feature walls or premium furniture, target CRI 90 or above. At Osdin, our LED downlight range starts at CRI 90.

What colour temperature is best for a Malaysian living room?
3000K warm white. It creates the relaxed, social atmosphere that suits Malaysian open-plan living areas. For modern minimalist interiors, 4000K is an acceptable alternative if you prefer a brighter, cleaner look, but avoid 6500K in any living space.
Can I mix 3000K and 4000K in the same house?
Yes, mixing across rooms is perfectly fine. Use 3000K in social and sleeping areas and 4000K in work and utility areas. The rule to avoid is mixing two colour temperatures within the same open-plan space, which creates a disjointed, unfinished appearance.
Common Lighting Colour Mistakes Malaysian Renovators Make
- Mixing 3000K and 6500K in an open-plan space
The harshest-looking mistake. One side of the room looks warm and inviting; the other looks like a convenience store. Always pick one colour temperature per open zone.
- Buying ultra-cheap downlights with unlisted CRI
Downlights that omit CRI from their spec sheet almost always ship with CRI 70 or below. Your RM8,000 feature wall paint colour will look like a completely different shade under them.
- Installing 6500K in bedrooms
6500K suppresses melatonin and keeps your brain in 'daytime' mode. This directly affects sleep quality. No matter how accustomed you are to bright light, swap the bedroom to 3000K.
- Choosing colour temperature by price alone
All three Kelvin ratings exist at every price point. The colour temperature decision costs nothing extra, it is just a matter of choosing the right SKU when purchasing.
